History of the Yellowstone County Jail

The Yellowstone County Detention Facility sits at 3165 King Avenue East in Billings. The county opened it on August 21, 1987, on a ten acre site built with room to grow. At first, the jail was designed to hold 174 inmates.

Yellowstone County is the most populous county in Montana, and the jail filled up fast. By 1995, the inmate count had passed the original capacity. The county broke ground on an expansion in June 1996 and opened two new dormitory style units in January 1997, adding room for 100 more inmates.

The facility runs on a model called Direct Supervision. Instead of watching inmates from behind glass, officers work inside the housing units. Yellowstone County was the first jail in Montana to use this approach. The jail serves the Billings Police Department, the Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office, surrounding towns, and federal agencies.

Why does this matter to you? Because a busy county jail means booking and release can take time. A bondsman who knows this facility, its hours, and its process can save you real hours of waiting. That's us. Call (406) 970-2020.
